Industry 4.0: Introduction to Cyber-Physical Transformation
Jia Xi Chen
Level: Introductory
Length: 7 hours
Format: In-Person Lecture
Intended Audience:
Scientists, engineers, technicians, managers or students who wish to get an overview over different aspect of digital transformation of the industry (Industry 4.0). Undergraduate training in engineering or science is assumed.
Description:
Digital transformation is the most misused term in recent years in addition to being a popular sales buzzword. Some people use the term in unison with Industry 4.0 and, in contrast, others see early digital calculators as their first step towards digital transformation. Part of the confusion comes from it being a long journey with an ever-changing destination and new pathways emerging all the time. All of us can only see a small fraction of the vast landscape based on our past experiences and current context, and yet believe it to be the universe. Based on our worldview we fall into the trap of being right albeit incomplete.
This interactive course takes you on an expedition towards cyber-physical transformation.
1. Taking a holistic view of the industrial society and demystify frequently used terms - digitization, digitalization, and digital transformation. Those terms are discussed in the context of Industry 4.0, consumers, governance, cyber-physical perception, and emerging technologies, like artificial intelligence, internet of things, digital twins & threads, semantic interoperability, extended reality, quantum technologies, ledger technologies, and additive manufacturing. On this basis a vision for holistic cyber-physical loops, the core for Cyber-Physical Transformation use cases, and a guideline on how to develop your roadmap for the cyber-physical transformation will be presented.
2. In this second part we will help you get started on your expedition by performing various ideation techniques.
Learning Outcomes:
This course will enable you to:
- acquire new tools, competencies, and knowledge to be prepared for the digital transformation
- share knowledge and insights, to create the next generation of technologies, products, business models, and application processes
- get an overview what digital transformation means for R&D, manufacturing, and social life
- become familiar with the new terminology used for cyber-physical systems
- introduce the complete modelling of a structure for product development and testing (digital twin) and use artificial intelligence for decision making
- create databases for product life files, sensor, inspection, and SHM data for predictive maintenance
Instructor(s):
Johannes Vrana is an entrepreneur, physicist, consultant, author, speaker, and trainer with 15+ years’ experience in NDE and 20+ in data science. His work ranges from applied ultrasonic testing to quantum optics, from quality assurance to science, and from large-scale industries to start-ups. Some of the highlights of his work: Ph.D. on Induction Thermography, former Chairman of the Siemens NDE Council, implementation of ultrasonic computed tomography into serial production, and author of the book "The World of NDE 4.0: Let the Journey Begin".
Dr. Vrana is leading multiple groups in national and international societies, mainly regarding NDE 4.0, digital transformation, and automated testing. He is well-published, editor of the Journal of NDE, editor-in-chief of the Handbook NDE 4.0, and received multiple awards.
His company “Vrana GmbH” specializes in NDE and digital transformation consulting and solutions, R&D, training, and software development. Vrana GmbH offers holistic cyber-physical solutions including NDE and Sensor IIoT integration, digital twin design, and value creation from data.
